North Zone Falls Short in Rain-Affected Battle against Victoria CC

In a clash that proved the unpredictable nature of the sport, North Zone suffered a narrow 19-run defeat at the hands of second-placed Victoria CC.

Despite a heroic individual performance and a spirited team effort, the elements and self-inflicted errors combined to halt North Zone’s momentum.

Victoria CC set a target of 163/7 in their 24 overs, anchored by a steady 36 from Chelsey Sooklal.

North Zone’s bowling attack, led by a standout 4-wicket haul from Kimora Daniel, kept the contest within reach.

In response, North Zone’s chase was headlined by a magnificent 70 off 71 balls from Naomi Ali.

However, the innings was hampered by a significant rain delay that altered the playing conditions.

North Zone ultimately finished on 144/6, falling 19 runs short of the target.

Speaking after the match, North Zone Assistant Coach Jessel George was candid about where the game was lost. While praising the overall effort, he pointed to “small sectors” of the game that cost them dearly.

“Overall the team performance was good. We just lost the game in some minor parts of it,” George said.

“After the rain interval, we went back out there with a game plan in mind and we did not execute it. From there it did not go our way.”

However, he was more concerned with a recurring issue: extras.

“That is something we have to work on, we have to get the ball in the right spot. We have to find our proper line when delivering, especially with the fast bowlers,” George said.

Captain Jessica Davis echoed the Coach’s sentiments regarding execution, specifically pointing to missed fielding opportunities in the inner circle.

Davis also highlighted the physical difficulty of batting after the rain break.

Because the match was played on a matting wicket rather than a turf pitch, the surface became treacherous.

“It was a pretty difficult change for the batters. (The rain) made the matting slippery so it wasn’t as easy to bat on  when you are trying to move your feet and play around the ball,” Davis said.

Despite the loss, Davis was full of praise for Ali’s half-century.

“She just went out there and did what she had to do… she took her time and we are all so happy for her making a 50 today.”

The loss leaves North Zone in third place in Group A with 29 points, just ahead of ‘Without Limits’.

Both George and Davis are looking toward their upcoming fixtures against teams lower in the table, such as Moses Lendore Cricket Academy and Brenda Solozano Cricket Academy.

While the upcoming games are perceived as “easier” on paper, Captain Davis insists the mindset will remain the same.

“It’s an easier game because they are lower down on the table but it’s going to be the same procedure, the same mindset and hopefully we will come out with the victory.”
