Match Day 8 Double Header – Sunday 21st May 2023
Police Remain Perfect in North Zone T20
Police took on Shannon Sports Club in the first match of Sunday’s double
header, which was reduced to eleven overs per side because of rain. Police won
the toss and chose to bat and amassed 146-4. In reply, Shannon were restricted
to 61-6 to lose by 85 runs.
Nicholas Sookdeosingh, batting at the top of the order for Police, led the way
with 56 from 29 deliveries. He hit three 4’s and five 6’s before he was out off
the final ball of the innings. Fellow opener Brandon Ramdial was dismissed
early on for six with the score on 11 but that only made way for Dejourn
Charles who scored a quickfire 29 off 12 balls with two 4’s and three 6’s.
Antonio Gonzales hit one 6 and one 4 in eleven runs but it was Brian Yearwood
who would partner with Sookdeosingh and together the pair added a blistering
92 runs in 36 balls. Yearwood contributed 34 in 16 balls and hit two 6’s and a
solitary boundary. Bally Rajaram took 2-31, Kelvin John 1-25 and Andy
Alexander had 1-27.
Shannon were up against it early with Kelvin John retiring hurt after three balls
of the first over and Iqwe Craig was caught off the bowling of Deon Wells in
the very next delivery. Dusty Joseph also went without scoring caught in
identical manner to Craig. Shannon were reduced to 25-5 in the sixth over and
Tariq Mitchell, like Sookdeosingh earlier, was out off the final delivery.
Mitchell made 16, Andy Alexander contributed 11 and Kenneth Stewart, who
gave the most resistance, was not out on 23.
For Police, Wells took 3-17, while Justin Joseph, Damien Brown and Brandon
Ramdial took one scalp each.
Man of the Match: Deon Wells
Pole 9 Secure First Points
Pole 9 won their first match of the North Zone Cricket Council’s T20
competition defeating Santa Cruz by eleven runs in the second match of
Sunday’s doubleheader.
Batting first after winning the toss, Pole 9 posted 155-6 in their 20 overs. They
then bowled well enough to restrict Santa Cruz to 144-4.
For Shannon, four of their top five batters got into double figures with a top
score of 37 from Riaz Mohammed. Wendell Samuel contributed 35 before he
was run out taking a much too casual second run. Mahindra Ramesh Ramdeen
made 25 and Rishi Mannah 21. Shannon benefitted from several dropped
catches as Santa Cruz were ordinary in the field.
Keron Donald was the best bowler for Santa Cruz with figures of 2-33, while
Kwasi Andrews, Barry Nicholas and Donovan Stripp picked up one each.
Santa Cruz missed the services of guest players Darren Bravo and Tion
Webster, who were away on QPCC duty but would have still been confident of
overhauling the target. However, some tight bowling and a lack of urgency with
the bat saw them fall short in their chase.
Keron Raymond led the chase with 54 not out from 47 balls but needed a strike
rate better than 114.89 to increase their chances of a win. Raymond and Devon
Charles helped rebuild the Santa Cruz innings after they slumped from 30
without loss to 34 for 3. The pair added 58 before Charles was out for 33 in the
13 th over with the score on 92. Charles was also guilty of being overly cautious,
his 33 coming off 29 balls. The North Valley team, at the fall of Charles, were
still very much in the game needing 64 runs from 44 balls with six wickets in
hand but the Pole 9 bowlers stepped up to the challenge in the back end of the
innings to strangle the Santa Cruz effort.
For Pole 9, Shawn Sakhan took 2-31, Darren Ragbir 1-24 and Vernie
Ramkissoon picked up 1-22. Only one of the seven Pole 9 bowlers used, went
for more than 10 runs per over.
Man of the Match: Riaz Mohammed
Match Day 7 Saturday 20th May 2023
Glenora Shock Barataria
For the second game in a row, Glenora scored in excess of 200 runs in the T20
competition. Following on from their massive 243 against Combine All Stars on
Tuesday, Glenora registered 214 for the loss of four wickets. In reply, Barataria
Ball Players were all out for 114 to lose by exactly 100 runs.
Half-centuries from Leonardo Julien, 71, and Sion Hackett 89 not out led the
charge for the Queen’s Park Savannah based team. Keon Mason chipped in with
24 before he was run out.
Julien and fellow opener Kenroy Williams put on 45 runs for the first wicket,
Williams falling for 5 in the fourth over. Such was the dominance of Julien that
when he was adjudged lbw to Carl Vialva for 71, four overs later, the score was 88. Julien blasted eleven 4’s and three 6’s in his 32-ball knock.
At that point, Hackett joined Mason, and they added 48 before Mason’s demise. Naseebullah
did not trouble the scorers, he was out first ball, caught at slip off the bowling of
Kevis John off the first ball of the fifteenth over. Hackett’s top score of 89 came
off 52 balls and included eight 4’s and five 6’s. Jesse Roland was the other not-out batsman on 13.
Vialva, John and Vaughn Brown were the successful bowlers for Barataria.
In their reply, only three Barataria players scored in the twenties, Dexter Sween
26, Kevis John 25 and Teyron Harbin 20. Vaughn Brown was the only other
batter to score in double digits, he made 12.
Dayanand Nigel Patrick turned back the clock to take 3-21 with his leg spin,
Stefon Bissoon was also excellent with figures of 3-27, Hackett followed his
half-century with 2-11 while Jonathan Ferran took 2-13.
