An 18-member squad was named on Friday evening by the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Women’s selection panel for the upcoming One Day International series against South Africa Women. The series is carded to take place between January 25 to February 7 at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
The squad includes three uncapped players: Guyanese duo of left-arm orthodox bowler Kaysia Schultz and batter Mandy Mangru, and Vincentian right-arm medium pacer Jannillea Glasgow. The three women were also members of the West Indies Women’s A team which played against Pakistan Women’s A Team last year. Experienced leg-spinner Afy Fletcher makes a return to the team after a period of maternity leave which will boost the bowling department in the absence of Qiana Joseph who has been ruled out due to injury.
The West Indies Women will savour the opportunity to use this series to prepare for the World Cup later in February, especially after the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup qualifying tournament was called off in late November 2021. “The squad has been preparing and building during the past year, even with the limitations caused by the pandemic and hopefully they can put it all together” stated Ann Browne-John, Cricket West Indies’ Lead Selector for women’s cricket. She also stated that the inclusion of the three young, uncapped players to the squad presented the opportunity for then to gain experience and develop their individual talents.
The West Indies Women are scheduled to arrive in South Africa on January 16, where they will have a training camp ahead of the four-match series against the South African Women.
