T&T Women’s U-19 cricketers take 2-1 lead in T20 series

The Trinidad & Tobago Women’s Under-19 team registered a 14-run victory over the Windwards Islands Women’s Under-19 team in a low scoring encounter on Saturday. T&T now lead the five-match series 2-1 in their bid to capture the Browne-John/McIntyre trophy.

Captain Shalini Samaroo won the toss for a second time this series and decided to bat first on this occasion. Shunelle Sawh and Katrina Ruben opened the innings but found that runs did not come easily as they would have hoped. The pair put on 38 runs together in almost 10 overs before the Windward Islands’ captain Zaida James accounted first for Sawh caught and bowled, and then ran out Ruben. The batters were dismissed for 31 and 13 respectively.

All-rounders Djenaba Joseph (1) and Samara Ramnath (3) struggled to get going in this match and did not contribute much to the score. Skipper Samaroo offered some resistance and put together mini partnerships with the lower order but eventually retired hurt for 11. Kirah Manpaul added some spark at the end of the innings by scoring a boundary on the way to 7 runs off her 3 balls faced. T&T finished their innings with a score of 90 for the loss of 6 wickets.

Chasing 91 for victory, the Windward Islands were off to shaky start as they lost their first 3 wickets for 36 runs, including 2 wickets in the space of 3 balls in the 12th over. Importantly for T&T, one of these wickets was the threatening James – dismissed for just 6. Jannillea Glasgow attempted to rebuild the innings, but the disciplined bowling of the T&T bowlers was just too much for the Windwards. When Ramnath claimed the wicket of Glasgow, victory was soon in sight as the lower-order began to crumble resulting in the Windwards getting to only 76 for 7 in their 20 overs. Ramnath, Kiara Ruben and KD Mitchell took two wickets apiece to hand the Windwards their second consecutive defeat.

Action moves to the Cumberland Playing Field on Tuesday April 19, where T&T will look to secure the series with another win.
