Division One leaders Pole 9 stymied by ground issues
El Socorro Youth Movement (EYM) took a massive step towards winning the North Zone league title by beating North Side Future Stars by an innings and 121 runs on Sunday.
North Side made a solid start with 203 in their first innings based largely around Kendall Guerra’s 43.
However, Keon Issac’s superb 114 not out, fired EYM to 408 for 8 declared and a monumental lead of 205 on the first innings, despite Darrel Dennison’s 4 for 48.
Akil Timothy, who had taken 3 for 44, took 6 for 24 to help bowl out North Side for 80 in their second innings.
Dominic Edwards also took 4 for 66 as EYM won by an innings and 121 runs.
They took 28 points from the match to take their season tally to 103 points, a whopping 44 points ahead of the next team on the table.
Paragon Sports and Cultural Club, who are now second in the points table, beat bottom-of-the-table club Santa Cruz Sports by 10 wickets at Diego Martin Central Secondary Ground.
Brent Lezama was again clinical with the ball for Paragon, taking 3 for 39 and 5 for 59 to skittle Santa Cruz for 107 and 95 in their turn at the crease.
However, the miserly Franklyn Rouse was key, taking 5 for 12 and 3 for 22 in the win.
Lezama also scored 25 to Richard Arneaud’s top score of 30 as Paragon got 160 in their first innings.
At the Queen’s Park Savannah, Savannah Boys moved back into third place with first innings points over Glenora Sports Club.
Aneesh Sookoo took 4 for 19 as Glenora fell for 163 in their first innings with Kenroy Williams getting 46.
Sunil Boochan then smashed 78 and Ravi Naidoo 52 off 27 balls to lift Savannah Boys to 302 for 8 declared.
However, Williams, who took 3 for 70, then led Glenora to safety with a battling 73 off 104 deliveries.
At Barataria Recreation Ground, QPCC North Zone took first innings points off home team Barataria Ball Players in a drawn match.
Andre Suglal (98) missed out on a hundred for QPCC as they started well with 270 for 9 declared.
Derron Wilson was the best bowler for Barataria with 5 for 68.
Barataria fell for 72 in their first innings with Matthew Da Costa (4/32) and Andre Seetaram (3/8) doing the damage.
Following on, Barataria got to 63 for 4 when the draw was declared.
Seetaram (2/16) and Da Costa (2/24) were on the rampage again, but Carl Vialva’s 36 not out took Barataria to safety.
In Division One, leaders Pole 9 saw their lead temporarily shrink to eight points after their match against Bourg Mulatresse was halted after only one day of play.
Pole 9 had skittled the home team for 48 at the Ato Boldon Recreation Ground with Rishi Mannah taking 5 for 10.
Pole 9 was 214 for 6 by the close of play with Riaz Mohammed on 134 not out.
However, the venue was unavailable on Sunday and the match will continue at a date to be set.
At Serpentine Road, Shannon Sports Club moved to within eight points of Pole 9 after wresting first innings points from St Mary’s College.
The home team got 235 in their first innings, with number nine batsman Khalfani Wilshire getting 50.
Lancelot McCathy had 3 for 65, while Yohance Kwesi (2/6) and Nigel Benjamin (2/28) shared four wickets for Shannon.
Shannon took a 53-run lead on first innings with Taariq Mitchell (69) and Nigel Benjamin (64) getting half-centuries.
Yasir Dean, who took 3 for 65 for the Saints in the effort, then blitzed 50 not out off 31 balls to force a draw.
At the Queen’s Park Savannah, Invincible Cricket Club stayed in third place despite slipping to an innings and 115 runs loss to Combine All Stars.
Rishi Rampersad took 10 wickets in the match (4/6 and 6/24) as Invincible fell for 63 and 72 in their two innings.
In between, Combine All Stars totaled 250 for 8 with Yousuf Ramlogan (76) and Earnil Ryan (61) leading the batting effort.
Miguel Mahabir took 4 for 62, the lone bright spark for Invincible in the match.
Finally, at Fatima Grounds, Fatima College earned first innings points against bottom club Ebony Sports to move up to sixth place.
Ebony got to 220 for 9 with Devon David scoring 63 and Dylan Lee Chow taking 3 for 49.
Fatima responded with 239 with Levi Burke (95 not out) missing out on a century, while Lee Chow struck 55.
Kadeem Roberts took 6 for 98 for Ebony Sports, while K Buddy had 3 for 68.
The match petered out into a draw with Ebony closing on 34 for 4.
