Fifteen-year-old Samara Ramnath spun a web of deception with her off-break bowling to demolish the Barbados’ batting line-up at the National Cricket Centre, Couva on Friday. Ramnath captured six wickets, including a beaver-trick, to help Trinidad & Tobago continue their dominant run in the TTWCA Under-19 Tri-Nation Series that also includes the Windward Islands.
Barbados Women won the toss and elected to bat making T&T toil during the eight-over Powerplay. West Indies Under-19 player and Barbados captain Trishan Holder led the charge as she and opener Zaliya Campbell gave the team a solid start with a partnership of 42 runs. The pair seemed as though they would take the team well past 50, but Samara Ramnath had other ideas and provided the much-needed breakthrough when she bowled Campbell for 9.
Holder was next to go as the T&T skipper Shalini Samaroo accounted for her wicket for 19 runs. It was then that the action started. Ramnath got 2 wickets in two balls – Theanny Herbert caught at mid-wicket, and then Solange Holford bowled for 1 and 0 respectively. She had to wait for the start of her next over to earn her hat-trick and that she did as she bowled NaiJanni Cumberbatch for 18. It didn’t stop there. The next ball she bowled new batter Elecia Bowman for a duck to register her first career beaver-trick. Shortly after, she picked up Nia Wood LBW, also for a duck, to record her career best bowling figures of 6 wickets for 11 runs. Djenaba Joseph, KDJazz Mitchell and Jessica O’Rosco then cleaned up the tail with a wicket apiece.
T&T Cruise to Victory
T&T began their reply with Shunelle Sawh and Ramnath, and both ladies made light work of the target. Sawh scored a run-a-ball 37 striking five fours, while Ramnath punished Barbados’ wayward bowling, blasting six fours on her way to 36 off 29 balls. The opening pair achieved the target in just 10.2 overs, allowing T&T to register their own beaver-trick of victories for the locals in the Tri-Nation Series.
Earlier this week, T&T registered a third victory against the Windwards Islands, led by a career-best knock of 72 from vice-captain Shunelle Sawh. The T&T Women play their last two matches of the series on Sunday 9 and Monday 10 April at 10 am at the same venue.
