North Zone T20 Tournament 2023

POLICE COMPLETE HISTORIC TREBLE

Police defeated Glenora in the final of the North Zone Cricket Council’s T20 competition to complete a rare zonal treble. The league title, the Forty Over title, and the T20.

The lawmen added the T20 trophy to their already packed trophy cabinet by demolishing Glenora by 115 runs in Sunday’s final at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex.

Nicholas Sookdeosingh was the mainstay of the batting scoring an even hundred as police racked up 202-2 in their allotted twenty overs. Glenora’s run chase never really got going and Police eventually dismissed them for 101.

Police piled on the runs

Glenora won the toss and for the first time in the entire competition, asked their opponents to take first strike. It looked to be a good decision early on when Brandon Ramdial was trapped LBW for 2 in the third over with the score on 15.

Glenora, however, would have to wait exactly eight overs for their next wicket as the in-form Sookdeosingh and Dejourn Charles added 105 runs before Charles was caught off the bowling of Kamil Pooran for 60. Charles was brutal on the Glenora attack, scoring his runs off just 27 balls, stroking 2 fours and 7 sixes.

An unbroken stand of 96 followed between Sookdeosingh and Police Captain Brian Yearwood with Yearwood undefeated on 40 off 27 deliveries with 2 fours and 2 sixes. Sookdeosingh brought up his hundred off the penultimate ball of the 19th over, much to the delight of the fans at the Diego Martin venue.

Glenora’s reply

A lot of Glenora’s hopes in their chase of 202 would have hinged heavily on openers Kamil Pooran and skipper Kenroy Williams but their opening partnership was short-lived as Williams was dismissed for 14 in the third over with the score on 25. Keon Mason joined Pooran and they were slightly more productive but Pooran fell for 24 at the end of the seventh over with the score on 54. That 29-run partnership was the best for Glenora as wickets fell at regular intervals, the last eight falling for the addition of just 47 runs.

It was a good all-round bowling performance from Police with Damien Brown leading the way with 3-11, Mikel Riley took 2-10 with Dion Wells, Brian Christmas, Brandon Ramdial and Reinaldo Sammy all picking up one wicket each. The last of Glenora’s wickets fell off the final ball of the match to spark wild celebrations.

Nicholas Sookdeosingh, for his unbeaten century, was named Man of the Match.
