North Zone demolishes arch-rivals East in U17 clash

Half centuries from Ryan Yearwood and Niall Maingot powered the North Zone Under 17s to a formidable total against their East Zone counterparts in the Price Club U 17 Zonal competition at Knowles St. Recreation Ground, Curepe on Friday 3rd March.

Batting first after losing the toss, North posted 276-8 off 50 overs on the back of 64 from Yearwood and 72 from Maingot. 

The East Under 17s were then bundled out for a paltry 87 in 30.2 overs.

East captain Samir Saroop must have rued the decision to field, as North openers Yearwood and skipper Aditya Ramdeen racked up 85 for the first wicket in 11.3 overs. Ramdeen was the first to be dismissed, caught by Jadon Simon off the bowling of Saroop for 21. Yearwood and Adrian Mahase took the score to 100 before the opener was caught by Stepphan McPherson off Yasir Dean in the 17th over. Yearwood’s 64 came off just 58 balls and included eleven 4s and one 6.

Niall Maingot top scored with 72 off 78 balls.

Mahase and wicketkeeper batsman Maingot then shared in a 101-run partnership for the third wicket before Mahase fell for 47, lbw to McPherson with the score on 201. Maingot added 47 runs with Nakalon Babb before he was Dean’s second wicket, also trapped in front, his top score of 72 came off 78 balls with nine 4s. Babb remained not out on 34 from 41 deliveries to help push the score over the 275 run mark.

Yasir Dean was the most successful bowler for East, taking 3-34 from nine overs. Jordan Mohammed picked up the wickets of Caiden Mack for 2 and Darius Popalie for no score in successive deliveries at the backend of the innings. He finished with 2-56. McPherson and Saroop took one each, while Arshad Harrilal was run out for 2.

East were not able to offer much resistance with Rajeev Ramgoolie 17, Skipper Saroop 12, and Joseph Mendoza 12, the only batsmen to score in double figures.

Maleek Lewis took 4/9 from 5.2 overs.

Maleek Lewis was North’s best bowler taking 4-9 off 5.2 overs, A. Harrilal picked up 2-19 while C. Mack, Dominic Redhead, and Joshua Cummings took one apiece.

Maleek Lewis, for his outstanding bowling figures, was named Man of the Match.
