Joseph’s 4-wicket haul hands T&T Women’s U-19 series win

Djenaba Joseph led the way a second time with the ball this series, to give the T&T Women’s U-19 cricketers a series winning victory against the Windward Island Women’s U-19 on Monday. Joseph registered her best bowling figures for the series taking 4 wickets for 15 runs including the prized wicket of captain Zaida James.

Earlier, skipper Shalini Samaroo won the toss and chose to bowl at the Cumberdale Playing Field. Joseph accounted for the first wicket of the day when she destroyed the stumps of opener Namiah Marcellin in the first over of the match for a duck. Skyy Smith joined skipper James at the crease and the pair toiled against the T&T bowlers but put on a half-century partnership before Joseph struck again to dismiss James for 29. The Windwards then struggled to put away the T&T bowlers and regularly lost wickets. Smith was the only other batter to get into double figures (18) as the other seven batters were dismissed without troubling the scorers with the team scoring 90/6 in their 20 overs. Skipper Samaroo took 2 for 17 and Samara Ramnath, KD Mitchell and Kiara Ruben finished with a wicket apiece.

The T&T Women started almost identically to their counterparts as they lost their prolific opener, Shunelle Sawh, for a duck in the fourth ball. Samaroo, promoted to opening the batting, was joined by Joseph and they put on 31 runs together. Samaroo was then caught behind for 16 off Selena Ross and for a short while, the T&T supporters might have suffered a scare as the team lost the next 3 wickets for 2 runs in the space of seven balls. However, Maria La Foucade arrested the slide and together with Kirah Manpaul (10) steered the team to achieve the target in 15.4 overs with the Windward Islands conceding 29 extras. Jannillea Glasgow and Ross finished with two wickets each.

With one match to go on the series, the victory ensured the Browne-John/McIntyre trophy of this inaugural series would be coming to Trinbagonian shores. The teams play their final match tomorrow (April 19) at the same venue at 10 am.
