Injury forces Pollard out of Pakistan tour

A hamstring injury sustained in the recent T20 World Cup has forced Pollard out of the West Indies tour of Pakistan. The West Indies captain of the white-ball teams will not travel with the team and, as a result, Nicholas Pooran will captain the T20 team while Shai Hope captains the ODI team.

All-rounder Rovman Powell replaces Pollard in the T20 squad and wicketkeeper-batsman Devon Thomas is Pollard’s replacement in the ODI squad.

In a media release, CWI said Pollard will undergo rehabilitation work in Trinidad, under the supervision of CWI’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Israel Dowlat. The release further added that an assessment of Pollard’s injury will in a few weeks determine his availability ahead of the upcoming home tours against Ireland and England in January 2022.

Pooran has had a successful stint as captain of the T20 team. West Indies defeated Australia 4-1, under his captaincy, in a home series earlier this year. This will be the first time Hope will be ODI captain and has a challenge ahead.

The West Indies are due to play three T20Is and three ODIs at the Karachi National Stadium. The first T20I is on December 13 while the final ODI is on December 22.

The ODI Series will be West Indies’ fourth series of 12 in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League in which the top seven teams can secure automatic qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. Positioned eighth of 13 teams, the West Indies can move above Pakistan into the seventh position. However, a 3-0 sweep will lift West Indies to third.
