All-round Joseph helps T&T Women’s U-19 level Series 1-1

The Trinidad & Tobago Women’s Under-19 team recovered from a first match loss to claim victory over the Windward Islands Women’s Under-19 team on Friday. T&T won the encounter by 46 runs to level the five-match series 1-1 in the battle for the Browne-John/McIntyre trophy.

Partnerships the key for T&T

The Windward Islands won the toss and inserted the T& T women to bat. The opening pair of Shunelle Sawh and Katrina Ruben batted well together putting on a stand of 49 that lasted just over 10 overs. St. Lucian all-rounder Zaida James finally broke the partnership as she had Sawh stumped for 47 off 65 balls.

Ruben was joined by Djenaba Joseph and the pair added a brisk 61 runs together with the latter blasting three boundaries before Ruben departed for 21 in the 19th over. Joseph remained not out as the T&T women made 118 for the loss of 3 wickets at the end of their 20 overs. First-match bowling hero James had the best bowling figures of 1 wicket for 16 runs from her 4 overs.

The Windwards began their reply cautiously with Skyy Smith and James opening the batting. Some sharp fielding by Joseph in the 4th over to run out Smith would ensure that the Windwards did not have a long opening stand. Jannillea Glasgow then joined James and the pair began to rebuild the innings. However, James’ half-century heroics from the first game would not continue in this match. Kirah Manpaul took a stunning catch on the boundary off Kiara Ruben to limit James to just 12.

Bowlers seize momentum

Buoyed by this wicket, the T&T bowlers then took control of the game as wickets began to fall regularly with the Windwards losing 3 middle-order wickets for no runs in the space of 9 balls. Glasgow offered the only resistance as the Windwards managed to get to just 72 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs. Djenaba Joseph also starred with the ball taking 3 wickets for 15 runs in 3 overs as KD Mitchell and Kiara Ruben took two wickets each.

Both teams play again in the third match at Arnos Vale Sporting Complex on April 16 at 2 pm.
