The inaugural series between the T&T and Windward Islands Women’s U-19 teams concluded on Tuesday, with T&T recording an emphatic 28-run victory to close out the series 4-1 and bringing home the Browne-John/McIntyre trophy.
T&T register highest score of the series
In the last encounter of the five-match series, the Windward Islands won the toss and inserted the T&T team to bat first. A new opening pair took strike: skipper Shalini Samaroo and Aniaya Roberts. The skipper did not last long as she was caught for just 1 off the bowling of Destiny Edward. Djenaba Joseph joined Roberts at the crease and together they produced an array of shots in a partnership of 79 runs which was the highest partnership between both teams for the entire series. Joseph was in fine touch and struck 3 boundaries on her way to 23 before she was dismissed by Selena Ross. Roberts smashed 2 sixes and 3 fours during her stay at the crease until the Windwards skipper Zaida James accounted for her wicket for a brilliantly played 42. Maria La Foucade, in her usual attacking manner, and Kirah Manpaul then hit a quick 19 runs together taking the T&T team to 123 for the loss of 3 wickets at the end of their 20 overs. Edward, Ross and James took a wicket each.
Joseph takes another 4-fer
The Windwards began their reply losing their first wicket without a run on the board. Djenaba Joseph got the ball rolling once again dismissing the promoted opener Skyy Smith for a duck – the first of her 4 wickets. Zadia James then displayed the only real fight of the innings putting up a 38-run partnership with Jannillea Glasgow and then a 32-run partnership with Schey-Ann Gaynes. However, when Joseph snared the wicket of James, the situation went downhill for the Windwards as the next 7 wickets contributed only 25 runs. Joseph and KD Mitchell were both unplayable and aided by the supporting bowlers Kiara Ruben, Samara Ramnath, Samaroo and debutant Ayah Baksh, the Windwards folded for 95 runs in the 20th over.
Joseph, James bag top honours
Windwards skipper James finished the series with the most runs -155 at a strike rate of 95.09 while Shunelle Sawh was the top overall run scorer for T&T with 86 runs. In the bowling department, T&T’s Joseph finished with 11 wickets overall and James was second with 8.
At the awards ceremony, Joseph and James copped the Players of the Tournament for their respective teams with Joseph scoring 68 runs at a strike rate of 86.08, in addition to her 8 wickets and James taking 8 wickets in addition to her 155 runs.
