Santa Cruz Sports Association

The Santa Cruz Sports Association was established in 1984 with the main goal of uniting the cricketers of the Santa Cruz community who were playing their cricket with other clubs throughout Trinidad and Tobago.  The Association has enjoyed many successes both on and off the field, whilst participating in the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board’s North Zone and Championship competitions.

The Association has produced or included in its ranks many present and past national players including the likes of the Bravo brothers, Dwayne and Darren, Eric Audian, Pascal Roberts, Frank Sorzano, Tony Gray, Dexter Sween, Barry Nicholas, Ken Hazel and Lincoln Roberts.  We have also developed youth players that represented Trinidad and Tobago at the youth level like Rishaad Harris, Seve Fraser and Brian Yearwood.

The Association has, since its inception, began a Youth Academy which in its first year of operation had approximately fifty (50) youths in the programme.  After some initial successful years, where the major achievements of the Academy were the Bravo brothers, Dwayne and Darren, Rishaad Harris, Seve Fraser and Brian Yearwood, the Association faced numerous challenges to continue the Academy.  However, the Academy was re-established this year with tremendous success.  The Academy was dedicated to our present West Indies Test player Darren Bravo and renamed “The Darren Bravo Youth Cricket Academy”.

It hosted approximately seventy-five girls and boys, ages six years to nineteen years old.  In 2016, the next edition of the Academy is scheduled to commence in January.

The Association has a membership of one hundred and twelve (112) members of which there are ninety (90) male and eighteen (18) female or including seventy (70) youth players.

The Association has faced many challenges within recent years that have led to poor performances on the field of play and a lack of vision and enterprise.  In order for its very survival, a new mission was required leading to a revitalization of the Association.

Some of the most common challenges faced included but was not limited to:

  • A lack of management structure
  • A lack of finance

The Santa Cruz Sports Association has campaigned in the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board’s various competitions from 1991 with some degree of success at all levels.  Over the years the Association also had a youth Academy that provided both the National and the West Indies Cricket Teams with quality players.  In 2015 & 2016, the Association hosted the “Darren Bravo Youth Academy”.
