Redhead, Dookie inspire North U-13 victory over East

Daunte Redhead scored a match-winning innings while Jake Dookie snared four wickets as North Zone beat East by three wickets in their opening match of the TTCB U13 Interzone tournament on Thursday at St Mary’s College Grounds.

Chasing 83 for victory, North lapsed to 13 for 2 before Redhead patiently added 32 not out off 48 balls to rally North to victory.

Earlier, Dookie took 4 for 10, while Tariq Small and Vivek Nandalal shared five wickets to bundle out East for 82.

Jake Dookie
Jake Dookie was the best North bowler with 4/10 from 5 overs.

North opens their campaign with a victory and will face Tobago on 1 May at Serpentine Road for a place in the semifinals.

After winning the toss, North asked East batters to take first strike at St Mary’s College Grounds, and the visitors responded with a 34-run opening stand.

However, after Jean Paul Barrimond Jr removed Devesh Thomas for a top score of 14, East never found its way back in the game.

Small dismissed Jovani Bootman (4), with Dookie castling Rahul Lochai (0) and Joshua Seenath (0) off consecutive balls to leave East reeling at 45 for 4.

Dookie did not get the hat-trick but had his third wicket when he had Ehan Dass caught for a duck.

Small then bowled Josh Cumberbatch (8) and Leandro Ramkellawan (1) in quick order to further put East on the back foot at 56 for 7.

Tariq Small
Tariq Small had figures of 3/14 off his five overs.

East suffered further losses with Shameed Singh (0) and Riquelme Francis (9) to Dookie and Vivek Nandlal, respectively, to fall to 78 for 9.

Nandalal then ended the innings by trapping Adriano Kassiram for 2 to bowl out East for 82 in only 21.4 overs.

Dookie was the most outstanding bowler with 4 for 10, with Small (3/14) and Nandalal (2/8) also receiving kudos for their bowling.

With a small total of 83 to get, North lost openers Tariq Raghoonanan (0) and Joshua Ramdhanie (1) cheaply to Cumberbatch before Barrimond and Redhead started rebuilding the innings.

The run-out of Barrimond for 15 would signal a collapse that saw North lose four wickets for 10 runs.

Jovani Boodram triggered the slide, accounting for Dante Arneaud (3) and Christiano Carrington (1), before Ramkellawan bowled Hamza Baptiste for a duck.

Redhead eased his way through the carnage and urged North back into the fight with a 20-run stand with Rahul Degapati (5).

Degapati perished on 5 after offering Dass a caught and bowled chance with his team on a perilous 67 for 7.

With 16 runs still needed, Redhead and new batsman Aiden Ramjohn closed up shop and batted North to victory.

They duly achieved victory off the third ball of the 21st over with Ramjohn unbeaten on 0 and Redhead scoring a superb 32 not out off 48 balls.

North won by three wickets and can clinch a place in the semifinals of the TTCB U13 Interzone with a victory over Tobago on 1 May.

East will take on North-East at Knowles Street in Curepe on the same day.

Summarised scores: East 82 all out in 21.4 overs (Devenesh Thomas 14, Vignesh Maharaj 10*; Jake Dookie 4/10, Tariq Small 3/14, Vivek Nandlal 2/8) vs North 83 for 7 in 20.3 overs (Daunte Redhead 32*, Jean Paul Barrimond Jr, Rahul Degapati 5; Jovani Bootman 2/9, Josh A.
