El Socorro Youth Movement (EYM) and Pole 9 Sports Club are on the verge of winning the Senior Division and First Division North Zone titles, respectively, after the completion of the penultimate round of the league.
EYM drew with Savannah Boys in Round 6 to open up a whopping 54-point lead on second-placed North Side Future Stars.
Pole 9 Cricket Club has a slim eight-point lead over Combine All Stars Sports Club, with both teams in with a chance of taking the title.
QPCC North Zone will be the opponent for EYM in Round 7, while Pole 9 will have to wait until after Easter as their game against St. Mary’s College has been rescheduled for 13th and 14th April.
Combine All Stars have a tougher assignment against Shannon Sports Club at the Queen’s Park Savannah, with the latter also harboring title ambitions.
Pole 9 is first in Division One with 103 points, Combine All Stars second with 95, and Shannon with 86 points in third place.
At Boundary Road, EYM batted Savannah Boys out of the game with solid innings of 299 and 255 for 9 in the match to earn first innings points and a tactical draw.
Their solid offerings were built on the batting of Keon Issac, who scored 61 and 59 not out in the match.
Yohan Sirjoo got 58 for EYM, while Chateram Ramlal was the best bowler for Savannah Boys across both innings ending with match figures of 5 for 95.
Isaac showed off his all-round qualities, taking 6 for 62 in Savannah Boys’ sole innings of 172 of which Aneesh Sookoo got 67.
At North Coast grounds, home team North Side Future Stars missed a chance to put some pressure on EYM when they lost first innings points against QPCC North Zone.
A poor North Side first innings of 122, combined with QPCC’s solid 232 put the game beyond the hosts.
In the second innings, North Side produced 232 all out with Kendal Guerra scoring 123 not out, and Akshay Colai taking 4 for 30.
At Barataria Recreation Ground, fourth-placed Paragon also slipped up, losing on first innings to Barataria Ball Players.
After Barataria produced a modest 156 in their first innings, Paragon was bowled out for 98 with Vaughn Brown (3/21) and Carl Vialva (3/24) inflicting most of the damage.
Having taken first innings points, Barataria declared their second innings on 108 for 6 to set Paragon an impossible 175 for victory in 12 overs.
The visitors got to 33 for 2 when a draw was declared.
Paragon’s K. Maison (5/40) and Franklyn Rouse (4/34) got the plaudits for their fine work with the ball but failed to set up the first innings win.
Finally, at the Brian Lara Recreation Ground, Glenora won on first innings against bottom club Santa Cruz Sports.
Kenroy Williams had another brilliant game, taking 3 for 29 as Santa Cruz totaled 182 and then scored 105 in Glenora’s monumental total of 352 for 9.
The game was declared drawn after the Glenora innings.
Turning to Division One action, Pole 9 put themselves in pole position to win the title and gain promotion with first innings points against Shannon Sports.
Rishi Mannah (5/50) and Shawn Sakhan (2/20) did the trick with the ball to bow out Shannon Sports for 153.
Pole 9 did just enough to get across the line and earn a 13-run first innings lead through Mannah’s 30.
Kevin John (5/43) and Neil Cumberbatch (5/63) did their level best for Shannon to keep their team in the match.
Shannon declared their second innings at 151 for 8 to set Pole 9 139 for victory in 7 overs.
Pole 9 got to 77 for 4 before the captains shook hands for the draw.
Mannah (2/41) and Sakhan (4/42) were again excellent with the ball for Pole 9.
At Ato Boldon Recreation Ground, Combine All Stars kept their title hopes alive with a convincing innings and 108-run win over Fatima College.
Combine All Stars bowled out Fatima College for 147 and 95 in their two innings with Daryl Douglas (6/16) and Rishi Rampersad (3/26) as Fatima’s chief tormentors.
The Division One title contenders then rattled up 350 for 2 with Ernil Ryan (239) and Ray Campbell (102*) scoring centuries and Yousif Ramlogan getting 56.
At Invincible Grounds, the home team won first innings points against Bourg Mulatresse Sports and Cultural Club.
Invincible’s first innings total of 140 just held up as they bowled out Bourg Mulatresse for 125 with Ryan Ali (3/20) and Shamir Ali (3/29) getting the majority of the wickets.
Invincible then batted the visitors out of the game, scoring 173 for 5 in their second innings.
Abraham Alonzo, who hit 36 in the first innings, got 72 not out in solidifying the draw.
Orlando Toppin took 5 for 36 for Bourg Mulatresse, their best performer of the match.
Finally, at CIC Grounds, St Mary’s College put on a batting clinic in their draw against Ebony Sports and Cultural Club.
St Mary’s roped to 317 with Josiah Roberts (71), Ismaeel Mohammed (63), and Avinash Boodram (64*) getting half-centuries.
However, Ebony held on grimly to get to 127 for 8 when the match ended in a draw.
The Saints went ahead of rivals Fatima College by a point in the standings.
