North Zone Cricket Council concludes a season and looks forward to 2024

A dynamic change around at the executive level of the 2023 Annual General Meeting of the North Zone Cricket Council has resulted in a new Vice Chairman, Ingrid Maxwell, being elected to office last Saturday. Ms. Maxwell is the first woman to hold the position in the body that organizes and administers cricket in the north.

Moving from the vice chairman’s position was Gregory Wales, who has taken on the responsibility of Treasurer of the Zone; it’s an office which was vacant before the AGM, the former treasurer having resigned. Both officers were elected unopposed.

All affiliates of the Zone, the Umpires, the Secondary and Primary Schools groupings attended the meeting and participated enthusiastically in the elections of the new officers.  Reflecting on the 2023 cricket season, Chairman of the Zone, Winston Sobers says “the first full set of games, after the disruption caused by the restrictions placed on competition because of the Covid-19 virus, were carried out during the season with all four competitions, Senior Division League, Division One League, 40 Overs Competition and the T20 Competition, being contested to a finish.”

Looking Ahead

“Planning for the 2024 season has already begun with Zonal committees, responsible for doing the planning and organizing work for the new season, have given the assurance that they are ready to renew their service to all stakeholders in the Zone,” says Chairman Sobers.

Presented at the meeting were the audited financial accounts for the operations of the Zone in 2022/2023 and the Secretary’s Report for the same period.

Amongst the activities to be fully engaged in the new season is the North Zone Academy, which has been under construction over the last 18 months. The Academy has been brought into operation to guide and encourage young players, boys and girls, requiring technical and mental preparation to play quality representative cricket.

The first phase of the zone’s women’s programme sponsored by the National Gas Company (NGC) started recently in the nets at the Queen’s Park Oval under the supervision of coaches Gregory Davis, a level 3 coach, former first class player and member of Queen’s Park Cricket Club and Tammika Nanan-Ramsumair.

The North Zone Council has begun to look for sponsorship to fully administer the various competitions in 2024 and to get the much-needed Academy fully functional, says Chairman Sobers.
